The Higher Education Certificate in Legal Studies offers you an introduction to law, with an emphasis on developing academic, legal and transferable skills. It is ideal if you have a general interest in the law, if you are pursuing studies but do not have the right qualifications or if you do not yet wish to commit to a full degree or if you want to improve your transferable skills for professional purposes. Our eight-week summer program is designed to give law students both a representative selection of our firm`s diverse practice and the opportunity to get to know our firm`s lawyers. We consider legal research and writing to be an important part of our summer program, but we also focus on engaging summer employees in activities such as client meetings, court practice, government hearings, and City Council meetings. Another goal of our summer program is to familiarize summer employees with cultural and leisure activities in the area. The firm hosts a variety of formal and informal social events throughout the summer, giving participants the opportunity to get to know our lawyers and their families. BB&K has successfully used its summer program as the primary source for new employees. Each summer employee is assigned two mentors who guide the summer employee to the company`s practices. We conduct an individual personal exam in mid-summer for each summer employee to talk to the student about their progress.
Work assignments are carefully coordinated to ensure that work is evenly distributed and that summer staff work with as many lawyers as possible on a variety of issues. The assignment of lawyers generally provides constructive feedback on individual assignments. As the first year of the De Bb&K Law Education/Scholarship Program for Diversity, Bb&K`s culture is one that respects differences and recognizes unique perspectives. With these goals in mind, BB&K is pleased to offer our first-year scholarship/bursary program on law student diversity. This program provides the recipient with a paid summer associate position in one of our participating offices.
